Until now, building sophisticated lighting products and experiences required substantial investment in software programming and custom hardware. RocketLife Light cuts out that heavy lifting. The Light platform is a powerful combination of hardware, software, LEDs, and sensors that lets companies and people create truly magical experiences.

At RocketLife, we have years of experience crafting custom hardware and software to make visual effects, so we knew there had to be a better way. We developed Light to solve the technical problems we've seen over and over again, and create a hands-on, visual approach to product design.

What Makes RocketLife Light Different

The big difference between RocketLife Light and general-purpose hardware is that Light is a complete system, designed to deliver advanced visual effects with realtime control and zero programming. We built the hardware, software, and mobile app from the ground up to work together and communicate wirelessly.

Light is easy to add to your projects and products, and easy to expand. Both the plug-and-play LightBox and the embeddable LightBoard offer extensive I/O for digital, analog, and serial connections to sensors, servos, sound modules, and other systems such as ESPy, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi.

What makes Light especially powerful is the included software, LightDesigner, which provides both sophisticated effect creation and easy WYSIWYG layout. The system is so fast, you can see your LEDs react in real time over Bluetooth as you scrub the timeline.

Timeline Software


Lighting is visual, so we created a completely visual approach to designing it. Simply load a photo of your project into LightDesigner, draw virtual LEDs on top, and drag effects to the timeline. Hit Play and see your animations play onscreen and on your actual LEDs at the same time. Double-click any effect to see its inner workings. Watch the video tour »

Edit colors, durations, modulations, randomness, and more. Create up to seven groups of LEDs to highlight specific areas of your projects; each group gets its own track on the timeline. Add up to four layers per track for sophisticated crossfades, sparkles, and gleams. You can even trigger effects from external sensors and the built-in clock.

Every event on the timeline can also support external I/O calls. The Halloween installation in our project gallery uses a motion sensor to trigger the lightning flash and thunder sound.

Bluetooth Hardware

LightBox & LightBoard

When you’re creating, you want to move fast. So we built advanced wireless support right into Light. Both the plug-and-play LightBox and the compact LightBoard Mini include NFC and Bluetooth BLE, so you’re just seconds away from connecting to your projects. Response is so fast that you can scrub the timeline and see your animations in real time on your LEDs. The hardware is based on the Nordic nRF52832, a 32-bit ARM processor with integrated BLE. We include level-shifting on multiple ports, a precision realtime clock and calendar, and (on LightBox), a 2000mAh Li-Po battery for mobile applications.

Your projects aren’t always next to your computer, so we built dependable, responsive wireless communication into Light from the start. A near-field communication antenna (NFC) lets you connect your phone to your LightBox or LightBoard Mini simply by moving it nearby. (See video.) Reliable Bluetooth BLE lets you change programs instantly, adjust brightness, update firmware, check battery level, schedule events, and even view a graph of connected sensors.
